34-Year Hospitality Industry Veteran Retires
ANAHEIM, Calif. (June 17, 2014): The Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau today announced that John McClure, associate vice president of convention sales, is retiring on June 30, 2014, after a 34-year career in the convention and visitor industry.
“John is the consummate sales professional and has always worked to create successful partnerships for his convention clients as well as our community,” said Jay Burress, president and CEO, Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau. “His diligence and professionalism have contributed to Anaheim’s success as a leading convention and meeting destination.”
McClure started his career in the hospitality industry in 1981 at the newly-opened Anaheim Marriott as director of national accounts. In 1989 he joined the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau as one of its key convention sales directors.
During his three-decade career John has booked hundreds of conventions, meetings and trade shows at the Anaheim Convention Center, and throughout the destination.
One of the most notable trade shows that have Anaheim home for more than 30 years is The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Show, an iconic music industry trade show. NAMM has been one of John McClure’s accounts since he was at the Anaheim Marriott. Cindy Sample, director of NAMM trade show operations, said, “It’s fortunate that I started NAMM just in time to have had the privilege to work with John. From the moment I met him, I sensed his kindness and authenticity. He has been so helpful and supportive through the transition with new management and staff at NAMM and I cannot thank him enough. I’m happy to call him my friend and wish him boundless joy and fun on his next adventure. He will be missed.”
When McClure first transitioned over to the AOCVCB’s convention sales team he inherited a number of significant medical meetings. One of the leading conventions was the American Heart Association. “John is more than a salesman – he is a trusted part of our team,” said Jason A. Ware, director, meetings, Office of Science Operations, American Heart Association. “He understands American Heart Association’s goals and business objectives. We are grateful that, with John McClure’s assistance, we were able to once again bring the American Heart Association convention back to Anaheim.”
Aside from his responsibilities to the Anaheim/Orange County community, for nearly 30 years, John has been a member of IAEE and PCMA, where he also served as president of the Southwest & Pacific Chapter of PCMA in 2001.
In his spare time McClure enjoys drumming, and this love of music brought him to co-produce the annual Newport Beach Jazz Party for the past 15 years. This musical side of John McClure will undoubtedly keep him marching to his own joyful beat for years to come with his wife Laurie, family and friends.
